CLEAR NEXT STEPS FOR GLOBAL CONSERVATION
Planning for the 2030 Global Biodiversity Framework is underway – the following motions build on the past efforts to move conservation forward in the coming decade.
© Jayme Dittmar | WILD12
WILD is proposing alternative pathways to achieving necessary, science-backed, conservation goals to overcome obstacles arising from global conflict and uncertainty. By giving equal focus to grassroots leadership and community-led efforts to keep nature intact, we strengthen alternative policy venues when national and regional governments have other priorities.
The Motions
Protect Old Growth
Virtual Vote (Aug 27-Sep 10)
For decades, the Sámi have defended old growth in Sweden, but they need the world’s help to ensure old-growth forests, and their lifeways, remain for future generations.
IP Territories & Intact Nature
General Assembly Vote (Oct 14-15)
Science informs us we must keep at least Half of Earth intact – We can do this by expanding Indigenous Peoples’ land tenure, strengthening cultural survival & conservation.
Mentoring the Next Gen
General Assembly Vote (Oct 14-15)
In unprecedented times, mentorships matter more than ever. Let’s support the next gen to prepare them for great challenges & great deeds.
Expanding the Sacred
General Assembly Vote (Oct 14-15)
A broken relationship with nature is at the root of its decline. Sacred spaces are more relevant than ever and need stronger recognition and practical guidance under existing protection categories.

Including Civil Society with a Eye Towards Logical Next Steps For Conservation
In August 2024, WILD convened the 12th World Wilderness Congress (WILD12) in Hé Sapa (the Black Hills of South Dakota) with the traditional Lakota leadership as hosts. At this event, delegates from 40 different countries and dozens of Indigenous territories agreed that:

- Indigenous leadership ought to play a greater role in conservation
- Indigenous Peoples can help meet science-backed spatial targets (Half) by expanding Indigenous territories and capacitating Indigenous communities for the purposes of conservation.
- The sacred needs greater protection and amplification as it can help restore a healthier relationship with nature.
- Young professionals deserve more attention and training to confront the difficult challenges ahead.
- Sápmi, the traditional territory of the Sámi nation, is besieged by old growth deforestation, threatening a valuable carbon sink and the Sámi lifeways. Global conservation can help.
- Sacred species, like the American Bison, benefit from Indigenous leadership and knowledge at the head of landscape level conservation efforts.
Learn more about WILD12 Resolutions >
WILD has adapted the resolutions passed at WILD12 for the IUCN in the four motions listed above. These motions draw on international precedent, building on efforts passed at, not only WILD12, but also prior World Conservation Congresses, included in IPCC reports, and determined at the UN Biological Diversity COP. WILD’s goal is to create a more democratic and inclusive conservation agenda while advancing new initiatives based on prior precedent.
You can help determine the next steps for global conservation
If you are a member of the IUCN, consider voting on these resolutions during the virtual vote period (August 27-September 10) or the General Assembly in Abu Dhabi (October 14-15).
