It is approaching the one year anniversary of WILD9 – I can hardly believe it! WILD is moving full-steam ahead on the Nature Needs Half™ vision, and many of the other programs launched at WILD9.
Over the past year, we’ve test-driven a few ideas to continue the ‘young-leader’ network that started at WILD9 (Facebook, Yahoo Groups, LinkedIn, etc). We heard from the emerging leaders in Merida, that they wanted a network that:
- provides information about jobs and events;
- connects them with peers and senior leaders;
- shares information;
- is a resource for professional development opportunities.
To keep our network active, we are now starting a monthly ‘digest’ of activities and opportunities for youth and young leaders working in conservation/protected area management. With WILD’s focus on Nature Needs Half™ and inter-generational collaboration, contributions geared toward these ideas are encouraged.
To start, I will be the editor of the digest – collecting information, assembling a monthly e-newsletter and distributing and posting the newsletter. Contributions can come from young leaders, established leaders – or anywhere in between – focused on news/opportunities for young leaders or intergenerational collaborative projects. Please send contributions to me (send to Emily@wild.org) by the first of each month. Contributions can include:
- Update on a project you are working on,
- Call for collaboration or assistance,
- Job/grant/scholarship opportunity that you have seen posted or have been awarded,
- News on intergenerational collaboration or discussion on this important topic,
- Announcements of conferences or other events.
I am open to other ideas for the digest as well! Each submission should include your contact information and/or information where readers can find out more. It can also include a photo (encouraged).

I see this as a tool for us to stay up-to-date on what other young leaders are doing, share opportunities and resources and connect with other leaders in our global conservation community who are interested in assisting and working collaboratively with emerging leaders. I hope it will be useful and look forward to feedback from the WILD network!
